NEO CHOP
2025
NEO CHOP is a typeface inspired by the need to break away from the enduring visual stereotype embodied by the typeface commonly known as Chop Suey. Characterized by curved and pointed wedge shaped strokes that superficially resemble two of the eight basic strokes in Hanzi (Chinese characters), Chop Suey imposes these stylized elements onto Latin letterforms without regard for the structural balance and harmony fundamental to Chinese calligraphy. Despite this disconnect, the style has dominated the branding of Chinese restaurants in Western countries for decades and continues to persist today.
NEO CHOP offers a contemporary response to this legacy. The typeface faithfully incorporates all eight traditional Hanzi strokes and follows the structural principles and spatial rhythm of Chinese writing. The typeface includes only uppercase letters to preservethe appearance of Chinese square characters. The strokes are delicate yet firm and confident, expressing clarity and strength rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics.
Another Serving
2025
Another Serving is a project that critically examines the cultural and historical implications of the Chop Suey typeface. Using the familiar form of a Chinese takeout box, it explores three interconnected themes: anti-Chinese sentiment, the resilience of the Chinese American community, and the problematic cultural associations embedded in the typeface. Through experimental typography and fragmented layouts, the project positions type as both a narrative vehicle and a critical lens, challenging Eurocentric design standards while encouraging readers to reconsider the meanings embedded in typography.
Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes
2025
Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes transforms a digital music video into a physical vinyl-size magazine. By slowing down and presenting the video frame by frame, the magazine shifts the ephemeral, fast-paced nature of digital media into a tangible, lasting object, encouraging deeper appreciation of the music’s emotions and visual language. Through this translation from screen to print, Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes preserves the transient essence of the video while offering a fresh, tactile, and personal experience for the audience.
Meditation Guide
2022
This editorial illustration project explores mindfulness and meditation through a five-issue newspaper series. Each issue focuses on adifferent stage of practice, from beginner to advanced, and combines text and illustration to create an accessible and immersive reading experience. By translating guided meditation methods into a tactile, printed format, the project encourages readers to slow down, engagedeeply, and build a sustained mindfulness routine. The five issues form a continuous progression yet can also be read independently asstandalone guides.
Invisible Women
2022
This book design project is based on Invisible Women and uses the circle as a visual language throughout the book, symbolizing feminist ideas of connection and shared experience. Several visualelements reinterpret key content from the text, such as the twohands on the cover referencing the temperature difference between men's and women's hands. The design places particular emphasison craftsmanship, with the binding and overall production entirely handmade to reflect the often-overlooked labor of women. Data from the book revealing gender bias and invisibility are laser-cut onto the book box, making the “invisible" visible, as a reminder of the persistent absence of gender data in society.
